Fantastic Bill O'Reilly Interview!

Reported by Janie - October 19, 2005

On the Daily Show...

Last night (10/18) host John Stewart graciously invited Bill O'Reilly onto his show for a brief interview. O'Reilly was his usual belligerent self, but Stewart fortunately was able to get a few digs in, including:

"I don't know if you know this, but they didn't find weapons of mass destruction…"

O'Reilly: " We have to take on a lot of bad people…"

Stewart: "And when are you going to start doing that?"

"It's true we add insult to injury....but you add the injury"

O'Reilly didn't seem to like the fact that Stewart actually had the nerve to call him on a few things, so he decided to take a stab at bashing Stewart, which came off as plain rude and unnecessary. He turned to the audience and stated: "You need to know this. The world could blow the hell up, he'd be giggling. How many people are dead in Katrina? How can we make fun of it?"

Comment: As I seem to recall, immediately after 9/11 it was Stewart that cried on their first night back after the attacks. It was Stewart that gave the moving monologue about how the view from his apartment was no longer the WTC, but now he was able to see something just as important and American, the Statue of Liberty. Four years later, those words still resonate with me, and no one moved me more after 9/11 than Stewarts' honest, raw, heart-felt emotions. How dare O'Reilly attack Stewarts' integrity, when he has none himself.

What was interesting was how O'Reilly came off to the audience. Those watching the show will be able to see that O'Reilly came off as almost desperate. He had no argument to offer to Stewart on any topic other than "What's the matter with you?" One would expect such a "great" journalist to be able to respond to excellent points made by a "comedian" with facts, rather than inane rhetorical questions. Stewart brought up the topic of O'Reilly's France boycott (after O'Reilly repeatedly bashed Steven Colbert and his new show "The Colbert Report" because he has a French name) and the audience simply laughed and booed at O'Reilly. He was even forced to threaten an audience member, somewhat jokingly, by pointing and saying: "And you, I'm coming up there...", to which the audience simply laughed at him again.

It seemed as though everyone in the audience thought that O'Reilly was a parody and didn't even remotely take him seriously. This caused O'Reilly to lose his cool, and he just had nothing to retort with other than empty threats and attacking the integrity of Stewart. If you didn't see the show, you can view the interview at Crooks and Liars.

As an aside, O'Reilly has been throwing around a particular word lately in interviews, and did so on the Daily Show last night: "RETIREMENT" (to which the audience of course applauded until Stewart cut them off)! As Keith Olbermann put it last night on his show: "Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!"
