Avian Flu Scare Gearing Up On Fox

Reported by Deborah - October 8, 2005

Molly Henneberg gave one of several reports today on Fox News about the Avian Flu Pandemic which emphasized all the horrible possibilities as well as President Bush's proactive response to this future possibility.10/8/05

Henneberg opened the report quickly mentioning that the Avian Flu strain can now only be passed from bird to human and would need to mutate before it could be passed from human to human. There was no discussion about the chances of that happening or the time frame involved.Henneberg went on to report of infected birds in Romania and Turkey and 64 deaths so far from the flu.

Scott McClelland appeared to express the President's concern. Then the horrid possibilities were explored. There could be 8.8 million hospitalized and 1.9 million dead. Food shortages and riots in the streets could also be expected.
Henneberg reported that Bush was meeting with 6 major drug companies to discuss their vaccine making capabilities. It was not mentioned if there was a vaccine available. A quick mention was made about quarantines but the military involvement was not emphasized in this report.

comment: Avian Flu is certainly a big problem but there is something very strange about this excessive emphasis. The reports on Fox are defintely framed to instill fear in the viewers. The worst possible scenarios are continually reported and the mention of food shortages, riots and quarantines make the plan for martial law sound like a dark reality for our future. There is something going on and we better be ready for it.
