Compare & Contrast: Bloomberg v Bush

Reported by Nancy - October 7, 2005 -

Today (10/7) FNL stuck Bill Hemmer in Times Square to report on the terror alert in NYC. Poor choice by the producers of the program -- the traffic noise contributed nothing to the program. They also chose to use the split screen, showing a subway entrance on the larger 2/3 of the screen for most of the hour, regardless of what was happening or who was speaking on the smaller 1/3 of the screen. This -- watching NYC citizens walking past the subway entrance or go up & down the entrance steps -- was possibly the most boring video I've ever seen on any news program, anywhere, any time.

There were reports from Julie Banderas in NYC & Catherine Herridge in DC, & Hemmer did a couple of mini-interviews (basically killing time while "WAITING FOR MAYOR BLOOMBERG TO SPEAK") but the longest segment (12:21pm-12:34pm EDT) of the noon hour was given to live coverage of the press conference held by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg & NYPD Chief Ray Kelly. After the presser was over, there were several recaps of it (Hemmer x 2, David Lee Miller) & an interview with "political strategists" (FNL regulars, Dem Rich Masters & GOP Terry Holt) about it.

Comments: Showing Bloomberg's & Kelly's press conference highlighted how lame Bush's press conferences really are. Bloomberg & Kelly obviously didn't pre-screen the questions or the questioners, didn't waste time with silly chit-chat & weak jokes, answered clearly, thought on the fly & handled the whole process beautifully.

NOTE TO READERS: Please stay on topic (FNL sticking Hemmer in Times Square, Bloomberg's press conf as compared to Bush's). O/T comments will be deleted. Thanks.
