Wastin' Away Again in Fox's Rita-Ville

Reported by Nancy - September 20, 2005 -

Today (9/20) on FNL, Bill Hemmer was still anchoring from New Orleans, & the reporting was all about the aftermath of Katrina & the impending doom of Rita. The last hour of the program included updated weather reports as well as on-site reporting from Orlando Salinas, Jeff Goldblatt & Rick Leventhal.

Again, there was only one of the talking-head interviews that FNL so loves. At 12:24pm (EDT) Hemmer reported on Treasury Secretary Snow's statement about delaying tax cuts, then interviewed Elaine Kamarck (Dem strategist) & Ron Kaufman (GOP strategist) about it. Kaufman waxed poetic about "America coming together" & bashed John Kerry [comment: so much for "coming together", huh?], & Kaufman said she'd like to hear Bush "assure" people that the federal government will be more competent in dealing with future crises.

Comments: Hemmer handles these interviews competently, but why does FNL have him in NOLA interviewing people in NY or DC? He must still be "in training" in the Fox style, because they're including a lot fewer interviews in the last hour of the program than they did when David Asman anchored it. Of course with all the feel-good post-Katrina stories & the watch-out-for-Rita stories, there was just no time to cover anything else. And isn't it fascinatin that, with all the hurricane coverage FNL has provided during the last hour of the program over the past monrh or so, they haven't done a single investigative report on weather patterns or environmental factors? Seems like it would be ideal for their tabloid style -- lots of talking heads & plenty of eye candy.

NOTE TO READERS: Please stay on topic (FNL's coverage of the Katrina aftermath, Rita, weather & lack of coverage of environmental issues & other major news stories). O/T comments will be deleted. Thanks.
