Cavuto Re-Caps Ray Nagin Presser w/a Lie That Supports Bush
Reported by Melanie - September 19, 2005
There was a fair amount of coverage over the weekend about the tension between New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and the Bush administration over Nagin's decision to reopen select portions of New Orleans, which Bush opposed. As of this morning, Nagin was proceeding with his plan and Bush was still opposing it.
This afternoon (September 19, 2005), Nagin held a press conference which Fox carried live during Your World w/Neil Cavuto. During the "presser," Nagin announced that he was suspending his plan because of Hurricane Rita.
When Fox left coverage of the presser, Cavuto summarized what Nagin said:
All right. Ray Nagin the mayor of New Orleans eating a little bit of crow here today. He had urged that people run back to New Orleans and get back and sorta check the status of their stuff. Federal authorities on the scene had said mayor, no offense, we don't think that's really a keen idea. The mayor now saying, essentially, you guys are right. He's suspending all re-entry into the city of New Orleans.
Comment: I find it insulting when news anchors feel the need to summarize what I saw and heard for myself. I find it doubly insulting when a news anchor lies about what I saw and heard. Nagin said, "I am concerned about this hurricane getting in the gulf. ... If we are off, I'd rather err on the side of conservatism to make sure we have everyone out." He didn't say he thought the feds (and by inference, Bush) were "right." It's about Hurricane Rita, Neil, not about the superiority of GWB's thinking.
