Is This Fox Guest a 'Common Conservative' or a Realtor?

Reported by Melanie - August 31, 2005

Tom Adkins, of CommonConservative.com, was a guest today (August 31, 2005) on Your World. Adkins is a very frequent guest on Fox's "business news" programs, most often as a participant in roundtable discussions. During these appearances, he is almost always identified by Fox as being the founder of CommonConservative.com (scroll down to the first paragraph of Cavuto on Business). He is an extremely conservative guy who takes on liberals "wherever he finds them." As recently as last weekend he said, on Fox, that, "Things are going great in Afghanistan and Iraq." Adkins, who also writes columns for conservative publications, has long hair and looks like a "hippie," so his radical conservative views may take some viewers aback when they first see and hear him. During the roundtable discussions, Adkins adds Democrat-bashing color, and positive conservative spin.

Today, Adkins appeared on Your World as the lone guest in a segment about limiting government spending on flood insurance. Cavuto introduced him with, "My next guest says that if you live in a place that gets perpetually hit, the government should help you once, and only once."

The segment was short. Adkins claimed that since l968, the US government has paid $12.5 trillion in flood insurance claims. He proposed that from now on, people who buy homes in flood-prone areas should be told that any losses they suffer will be covered one time, and then, "that's it."

Today, as if to give Adkins more authority on housing and insurance issues, Fox identified Adkins as being from the "Re/Max Property Center." Cavuto identified him that way in his intro, a chyron at the bottom of the screen identified him that way, and today's Your World website identifies him that way.

Comment: Isn't it interesting that Fox changes the way it identifies people? One day Adkins is from CommonConservative.com. The next, he's from CommonConservative.com and the Re/Max Property Center, and the third day he's simply from the Re/Max Property Center. Those who saw Adkins today thought he was a realtor -- they hadn't a clue as to his other life.

UPDATE (January 28, 2006): Today we learned that Tom Adkins is married to Brenda Buttner, Fox's "Senior Business Correspondent."
