Fox Finds the Bright Side of Katrina

Reported by Janie - August 31, 2005

Yesterday (8/30) on Dayside, guest-host Juliet Huddy spent the majority of the show covering Hurricane Katrina, and the devastation the area has been forced to deal with. Amidst the coverage of the hurricane, Huddy was able to insert two segments, another round of "In This Corner" and an interview with Ben Stein.

The first segment between hurricane coverage, was "In This Corner" with Ellis Hennican and Rich Lowry (regular Fox contributors). Huddy spent most of the interview discussing the effects of the hurricane, the possible politicization of the hurricane, and the effect on gas prices. At the end of the segment, Hennican stated: "Congress and the President signed this energy bill that does absolutely nothing to lower gas prices, was mostly a bunch of tax breaks for oil companies, whose profits, I've noticed, are pretty darn healthy these days..."
Huddy retorted: "The president by the way, is heading, he's cutting off his vacation, he's heading back to Crawford tonight and then he'll be back in Washington tomorrow."

Comment: What? What does Huddy's statement have anything to do with the topic at hand? She completely ignores Hennican's truthful statement, refuses to discuss his point, and her response is simply praise for what Bush is doing now. She cannot address something the President may have done wrong, and her only solution is to praise him for cutting his vacation short...by two days, after continuing his vacation two days after the hurricane has hit, and rescue efforts are under way, which Huddy neglects to mention.

After more coverage of the Hurricane, the final segment was an interview with Ben Stein. After discussing the hurricane, and Stein's new book, Huddy asks the question: "Is there any bright side to this whatsoever? You mentioned earlier before the segment started, new home construction, new building." Stein responded: "There will be a tremendous boom in home repair, new construction, Lowes's, Home Depot, those stores like that will just explode in terms of growth in that region of that country."

Comment: People are still dying, suffering, evacuating, and coping with this horrific event, yet Huddy and Stein are musing over how great this is going to be for the corporations? How distasteful!
