The FOX News Hate Machine Stalls Out

Reported by Ellen - August 23, 2005

Is there any right-wing hate-monger who won't get a warm reception from FOX News? I don't think so. The latest is someone new to me, David Kupelian, author of "The Marketing Of Evil: How Radicals, Elitists, and Pseudo-Experts Sell Us Corruption Disguised as Freedom." This book, published by WND (short for World Net Daily), received its national launch yesterday on Hannity & Colmes and on Sean Hannity's radio show. Alan Colmes, however, put up an effective road block.

Kupelian started out by saying that gay rights were marketed to the US as part of the "gay rights agenda."

Colmes wisely switched the topic and put Kupelian on the defensive by asking if the Iraq war wasn't marketed to the American public via a marketing plan. As an example, Colmes used Andy Card who said that the war should be brought up after Labor Day, not in August. Colmes said, "The selling of the war to the American people, which many people think is also evil - that was a marketing plan."

Kupelian had to admit that Republicans use "some of the same techniques."

Colmes: But you're blaming the liberals.

Kupelian: Not entirely.. Maybe just 90% of the time. It's a marketing war where established propaganda techniques are used to, basically, manipulate America.

Colmes: But you're going after liberals, let's say 90%... What's hurting America more - gay rights or the war in Iraq?

Kupelian had to back off. He said marketing in itself is not evil, it's a smart thing. "It's accentuating the positive and maybe you're ignoring the negative."

Colmes interrupted. "... Creating a war?"

Hannity then had to back up and play defense, too. He said that Kupelian was really talking about propaganda techniques, how it influences families, children and the culture.

Kupelian compared it to the Soviets jamming the radio signal of Radio Free Europe. "Jamming today is basically attacking and silencing opponents." He pointed to people attacking "the gay rights agenda" as being immediately attacked as being a homophobe. "See, this is jamming because what happens is, there's no real debate. There's no real conversation, a national conversation, about what is this really about. If you object to it, you're a homophobe. If you object to the war, you're a Nazi."

Kupelian, ready to go back on the offensive, said, "The liberals have won the marketing war. They are experts at marketing."

But Colmes stopped him by saying, "Oh, no, I don't think so. Conservatives win all the elections."

Kupelian said, "Culture is owned by the left."

Colmes: "And we're called traitors if we're against Bush's war."

Point, match to Colmes. The segment was over.
