Or, How a Cheap Smear Book Made it to #14 on Amazon.com in 17 Days
On July 1, 2005, HarperCollins released a book titled 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America: (and Al Franken Is #37), by Bernard Goldberg. Goldberg is a former CBS News employee turned right wing opportunist and smear monger. HarperCollins is a division of News Corp., Fox News' parent company.
Since July 1, Goldberg has appeared on Fox News six times (by the end of the day on Monday, 7-18, he will have appeared eight times).
July 5, 2005 - Hannity & Colmes
July 9, 2005 - Heartland (Here's Chrish's post.)
July 11, 2005 - Dayside
July 12 - Fox & Friends
July 13, 2005 - Big Story (Here's a "transcript," edited for "clarity," and here's Chrish's post.)
July 17, 2005 - Weekend Live
UPDATE 7-18-05: Goldberg appeared on Fox & Friends this morning, and, according to his schedule (see below), he is to appear on O'Reilly tonight.
Here's Goldberg's schedule as posted on his website.
Comment: As I said above, HarperCollins is a division of News Corp., which owns Fox News. Think about what's happening here. Someone like Goldberg writes a smear book that dovetails with the smearing and propagandizing already being done by the radical right, Fox being one of its most prominent voices. Rupert Murdoch publishes the book. A web page is set up on the publisher's site (see below) to smear from there, and the author goes on a publicity tour which includes many appearances on Murdoch's Fox News. During the author's appearance(s), Fox shows the book's cover and generally promotes the book, but the audience is never told about the author's connection to Fox and News Corp.
Lo and behold, 17 days after the book is released, it's ranked #14 on Amazon.com. Goldberg's making money, News Corp.'s making money, and Fox had a ready-made guest for six segments (thus far) during which it not only peddled a News Corp. product, but bashed the left, using Goldberg's book as fodder.
What a machine.
A few asides:
There's a poll on the book's web page at HarperCollins: Who Do you Think is the #1 Person Screwing Up? The candidates are: Arthur Sulzberg, Al Sharpton, Howard Dean, Michael Moore, Dan Rather. I presume by "Arthur Sulzberg" they're referring to the publisher of the New York Times. Here's the NYT's Masthead. His name is Arthur Sulzberger.
Compare Goldberg's interview with John Gibson on the Big Story, above, to his interview with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show.
