Bombs in London? It's All About Us!

Reported by Nancy - July 7, 2005 -

Want some "hard news" about the bombings in London? I hope viewers weren't counting on FNL today (7/7), because they chose, as David Asman put it, to focus on how they've affected us in the US. It was a toxic brew of narcissism & fear-mongering.

During the last hour of the program, for example, there wasn't a single segment that updated what was happening on the ground in London -- although there was plenty of video of it as a backdrop for whatever the talking heads were saying. No damage assessments, no tallies of dead or wounded, no interviews with survivors or local first responders or local leaders. The interview segments were merely an excuse for some cheerleading & chest-pounding about how swell the US (in particular, the Bush administration) has been & continues to be in fighting the "War on Terror". In other words, it's all about us.

Here's what FNL & its guests were emphasizing about the London bombings:
*"... the President standing firm with" UK PM TBlair
*the bombings will "change the world's focus back to the War on Terror"
*"every time Al Qaeda strikes, it helps our union against Al Qaeda"
*"perhaps the PATRIOT ACT itself doesn't go far enough"
*Al Qaeda is "intent on hitting our allies"
*the bombings show that there "may be Al Qaeda cells" right here in the US
*the bombings "remind Americans to be on the alert"
*there's "no cause for partisan bickering"
*"Could the same thing happen here?" Could terrors cells be operating "under our radar?"
*"We are going to be attacked again. I can't tell you when, but we are going to be attacked again."

Here are the segments during the last hour of this so-called "hard news" program:
12:00pm - BSkyB interview of Rudy Giuliani (GOP, former mayor of NYC)
12:11pm - interview of Dennis Ross (former US Ambassador) & David Levy ("former national security official")
12:19pm - interview of Sen Richard Shelby (R-AL)
12:21pm - Kathryn Herridge reported on raising the terror alert level for US transportation systems
12:25pm - interview of Bill Gavin (former FBI Asst Director, NYC)
12:29pm - live to statements by NY Gov GPataki (GOP), NYC Mayor MBloomberg (GOP) & NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly
12:31pm - interruption to replay taped statement by UK PM TBlair
12:34pm - back to live statements by Pataki, Bloomberg & Kelly
12:45pm - Dagen McDowell reported on US markets' response to the bombings
12:49pm - interview of Representatives Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) & Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)
12:54pm - interview of Frank O'Hare (former NYPD Ops Cmdr)
12:56pm - teaser: "coverage" will continue with Shep Smith

Comments: Considering that News Corp has significant assets already in place in London, the lack of local coverage was appalling.

NOTE TO READERS: Please stay on topic (FNL's coverage of the London bombings). O/T comments will be deleted. Thanks.
