Rah! Rah! Pep Rally on FNL!

Reported by Nancy - June 28, 2005 -

Today (6/28) FNL was all about whipping up support for Bush in advance of his planned speech tonight. They had to squeeze it in amidst yet more Holloway speculation (setting new lows for self-promotion by continuing to show long clips from other FNC programs like "On the Record") & the usual eye candy (shark attack in FL! fiery inferno in TX!).

11:08am - Brigitte Quinn gushed that "The commander in chief will outline his winning strategy" for Iraq, to intro Wendell Goler previewing Bush's planned speech tonight. FNL showed video of Bush at a previous photo-op using military personnel as props, with a rousing Sousa march as the background audio.

11:13am - teasers included: "John Kerry" [comment: note no honorific] "has some advice for the President"; "more about the President's speech, of course"

11:15am - Quinn interviewed Sen Richard Shelby (R-AL) about Bush's speech. Quinn opened by showing some excerpts of an oped piece by John Kerry in the NYTimes [comment: again, Quinn did not use his title "Senator"] & asking, in a tone of disbelief, if the US hasn't been doing those 2 items already. Shelby sneered that Kerry is not President, then proceeded to hit the GOP talking points (e.g., a timetable "would aid & abet the enemy", Bush will "outline progress made" in various areas, we are "in for the long haul but not permanently", Bush has "stated his reasons [for invading Iraq] many times", the invasion was the "right decision"). Quinn's questions were well beyond softball & could have come straight from the writers working on Bush's speech (e.g. what is the most important thing for Bush to emphasize in order "to convince the Amer people to be patient")

11:30am - Uma Pemmaraju read headlines, including: Bush speech

11:58am - teasers included: Bush speech

12:06pm - WGoler essentially repeated his earlier preview of Bush's speech. FNL showed video of Bush at a previous photo-op using military personnel as props, with a rousing Sousa march as the background audio.

12:23pm - Asman interviewed Sen Trent Lott (R-MS) [comment: making sure, unlike Quinn, to use his title] about Bush's speech. Asman opened by asking if Lott has "any doubts" -- Lott doesn't, & his answer included stock GOP phrases like "stay the course." While Lott was talking, FNL showed video of Bush at a previous photo-op using military personnel as props, with a rousing Sousa march as the background audio. Asman noted that some GOPs now have questions about Iraq & asked Lott how Bush can convince Dems if he can't control the GOPs. Lott said "we should ask questions" such as "do we have a plan" (he said "the answer is 'yes' "). Asman's last question was whether Bush has "used up his political capital". Lott hemmed & hawed, eventually saying it's "not a matter of time" but "a matter of results" & the country's "mood will change" as we see good results.

12:46pm - plug for Bush speech

Comments: The above summary does *not* include the actual ads for FNC's coverage of Bush's speech. The only guests discussing the topic were 2 GOP Senators -- so much for "balance".

NOTE TO READERS: Please stay on topic (FNL's cheerleading for Bush). O/T comments will be deleted. Thanks.
