Join the "Truth in News" Rally at Fox News in Denver on Saturday!
Reported by Melanie - June 22, 2005
Three college students have organized a "truth in news" rally to be held in Denver, Colorado on Saturday, June 25. (Cool huh? There is hope, hard as it is to find these days. Bloggers, please pass this on. We "elders" must support and encourage grassroots efforts like this. We need these "kids" as much as they need us. Let's help them.)
Here is their press release. Let's start a fire! (Oops - the FBI might misexaggerate that (if you know what I mean).)
RALLY FOR TRUTH IN NEWS REPORTING GOING FORWARD AT FOX DENVER REGIONAL FACILITY: 1PM, SATURDAY, JUNE 25
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRIDAY, JUNE 17, 2005
CONTACT: Allegra Scarano, Mickol Heck, or Terry Topping, 720.366.9388
Denver: After a postponement earlier this month due to bad weather, the Students for Responsible Journalism are preparing for a peaceful rally and protest next Saturday, 25 June 2005, at Foxs Denver regional media facility.
"We apologize to anybody who didnt get the word that we were rescheduling for the 25th, said SRJ member Mickol Heck. We wanted to be sure that the event didnt get ruined by bad weather, which would have just given Mike Rosen and Bill OReilly that much more to prattle on about."
In addition to several area students who will speak at the rally concerning media bias and Fox News openly deceptive coverage of the Iraq war and Bush administration policy in general, the Students for Responsible journalism will deliver a letter to Foxs local affiliate: asking it to please help counter Fox News deleterious effect on the informed civic participation of American citizens by taking time out of their vacuous local news broadcast to objectively cover national and foreign policy issues. In addition, the letter will call on the Fox News Channel to conform to some rudimentary principle of fairness in its news reporting, and seek to undo the damage done by years of deliberately propagandizing and misinforming the American public.
SRJs letter is available here.
SRJ is asking all similarly concerned citizens to sign the letter at the above website. We will deliver it to Fox News local affiliate next Saturday.
Media organizations, even in the absence of the FCC Fairness Doctrine wrongly repealed in 1987, have an obligation to the public to provide fair and balanced news. The Fox News Channel has violated this trust, and compromised our democratic society in open collusion with the sitting administration.
Students for Responsible Journalism will hold a peaceful rally and protest at Foxs Denver media facility, 100 E. Speer Boulevard, next Saturday, 25 June 2005 at 1PM.
Students for Responsible Journalism is a nonpartisan student group formed to demand journalistic integrity from todays corporate media.
