Cavuto re Lautenberg: A Sorry Ass & a Whining, Self-Absorbed Loser

Reported by Melanie - May 11, 2005

I happened to switch to Fox at 5:06 p.m. ET today (May 11, 2005). The "Big Story w/John Gibson" was on and Gibson was interviewing Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ). Lautenberg, a member of the Senate's Governmental Affairs Committee was talking about what happened inside the Capitol today when it was evacuated.

Lautenberg said the Capitol has "never had a drill" (ever). He said people were confused about where to go and there was "enormous crowding" at the doors and elevators. He said the building needs a "loudly audible" warning system, and it "needs a little dress rehearsal" so everyone knows what to do next time because "we don't have an organized system."

Comment: I think Lautenberg's points are perfectly reasonable. I find it astonishing that the capital doesn't have some sort of building-wide alert system, that practice drills have never been held (remember "fire drills"?), and that people don't already have assigned exits. It makes me wonder what the heck has been going on since 9/11 if fundamental arrangements like that haven't been made. I think Lautenberg is perfectly within reason to be concerned and if I worked in the Capitol I'd be happy he raised these issues. But, what struck me the most is the amazing way Fox News orchestrates its programming, almost like a play or a ballet.

Just minutes earlier, at approximately 4:58 p.m. ET, Neil Cavuto delivered a scathing editorial about the evacuation, and some who "may not like what's going on" and who, "didn't waste a nanosecond to trash the very folks trying to protect your sorry asses." (Read the editorial here. It's vicious.)

Cavuto delivered his editorial, specifically naming Lautenberg and calling Lautenberg and his ilk "sorry asses," and later, "whining, self-absorbed losers." Then, lo and behold, minutes later, one of those sorry ass, whining, self-absorbed losers is right there on the screen! This is how Fox discredits Democrats or anyone else who comes within a mile of criticizing the Bush administration or making it squirm. When Democrats appear on Fox's screen (giving the illusion of "fair and balanced news"), they've either been undermined before their appearance, or they will be afterward. I tell you, Fox is such a piece of work.
