How to Write a Best Seller

Reported by Judy - May 8, 2005

Conservative talk radio host Mark Levin is one lucky guy. He writes a book on the arcane subject of the constitutional role of the judicial branch and it turns into a best seller.

How convenient that Levin has a conservative radio talk show on which he can promote his book. How convenient that Rush Limbaugh, who wrote the introduction, also has a conservative radio talk show on which to promote his friend's book.

What a coincidence that Levin wrote a book on the "tyranny" of the U.S. Supreme Court just at the moment that Senate Republican leaders decide to end the use of the filibuster for judicial nominees.

What a coincidence that conservative religious groups such as Focus on the Family had the brainstorm to schedule Justice Sunday just as Levin's book is attracting attention.

What a coincidence that Focus on the Family decided a good way to prep for the Justice Sunday event was to read Levin's book so it promoted it on its website. It didn't just promote the book, however, it sold copies of the book for a "suggested donation" of $28. What a coincidence that a "donation" could be tax-deductible.

What a coincidence that Focus on the Family bought the books and its purchases would count in the book's sales whether anybody ever made a "suggested donation" in order to have one mailed to them.

And what a coincidence that with Focus on the Family listing Levin's book as a "recommended resource" on its website, it becomes a New York Times best seller, which guarantees more publicity for Levin's book.

All those coincidences make me wonder what goes on behind the scenes in conservative circles. Or am I being too cynical?
