Jim Lehrer Handles Hannity

Reported by Deborah - April 28, 2005

According to the teases in advance of Jim Lehrer's appearance on H&C, 4/26, he was coming on the show to talk about the liberal media's treatment of John Bolton. In reality, Jim Lehrer was planning to plug his new novel, The Franklin Affair, and had no intention of playing into Hannity's hands.

After a brief discussion of Lehrer's 15th novel about Ben Franklin, Hannity tried to engage him in a discussion about a NYT article about Bolton which Hannity considered biased.Jim Lehrer simply replied that he didn't know enough about the article to make a statement."I'm going to dodge. I'm not informed enough. That's not what I do."

Then Hannity told Lehrer that although he "sensed his sincerity" he believed that the bias in the mainstream media has contributed to the success of talk radio, cable news and blogs.Lehrer did not take the bait saying that he loved this new media providing more voices on issues. Lehrer added that he was certain that there was no liberal bias on News Hour and that was all that really concerned him.

Comment: If Jim Lehrer had decided to to play Hannity's little game, there would have been a fruitless debate giving Hannity a chance to get in his worn out jabs. I like to think that Jim Lehrer planned this approach but no matter because it worked out perfectly.
