Pat Boone: Was Schiavo Heart Attack a Murder Attempt?

Reported by Judy - March 23, 2005

Fox News Channel tried again to drag the husband of Terri Schiavo through the mud Wednesday (March 23) when entertainer Pat Boone appeared on The Big Story with John Gibson and suggested that Terri Schiavo's persistant vegetative state was caused by an attempted homicide.

Boone was responding to a question from Gibson about why Terri Schiavo's parents, rather than her husband, Michael Schiavo, should have the final say on whether she is kept alive via a feeding tube.

Boone replied that when paramedics responded to Michael Shiavo's call for help when his wife suffered a heart attack, they initially thought they were responding to a homicide attempt. "What caused this heart attack to begin with?" asked Boone. He said Terri Schiavo was later found to have multiple broken bones.

Boone implied that Michael Shiavo had an ulterior motive in wanting not just to let his wife die, but "to put her away."

"Why does the husband so desperately not want his wife to live when all he has to do is let her parents who love her take care of her? That's a big question," he said.

Boone also asserted that Terri Shiavo "wants to live" and that she can recover with therapy.

Gibson let Boone's comments about Michael Schiavo go without challenge. He probably didn't dare to press Boone, said the scurrilous allegations had been aired by Terri Schiavo's family members on Sean Hannity's show just a few days earlier.

The excuse for having Boone on the show was that he was one of several Hollywood celebrities speaking out on behalf of Terri Schiavo. Boone said his grandson has come back from a serious brain injury suffered in a fall from a roof more than three years ago and that Terri Schiavo could recover but she has been denied therapy.

The Boone segment was part of nearly 20 minutes of Schiavo case coverage covering the legal moves of the day, including the refusal of both a panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals and later the full 11th Circuit Court, to hear the case.

One other interesting segment dealt with the arrest of 10 protesters who were arrested outside of the hospice while attempting to bring water to Terri Schiavo. The Fox reporter went on about the sacrifice these people were making by being willing to be arrested and then sit in jail for 24-hours before being allowed to make bail. Fox has never been so complimentary toward liberal protesters. Remember its coverage of the anti-war march during the Republican convention in New York?
