Budget Cuts Won't Affect the Pentagon or Homeland Security

Reported by Ellen - February 7, 2005

Today on Studio B with Shepard Smith he spoke with Wendell Goler, White House correspondent, on the President's proposed budget cuts. Goler explained that out of 128 programs that the president wanted to cut last year, only 24 were actually cut. This year he wants to cut 150 programs or eliminate them entirely.

They cut to a tape of the president surrounded by his cabinet. The president told his cabinet that these programs will simply have to make due with less. He said that there would be a 1% cut on everything (except defense and homeland security) and these programs will have to demonstrate that they get results. The president said, "The poor and disadvantaged actually ought to be asking that question, too. In other words, what is the goal of that particular program? If that goal isn't being met the question ought to be, why isn't that goal being met? (comment: not sure if this was a bushism or not, but I'm sure that poor mothers on the WIC program who receive milk and dairy products will not ask about the programs goals, only that they may have to do with less)

Goler went on to say that Democrat's 'like Ted Kennedy' said the results of the presidents cuts will be crowded classrooms and more expensive college loans. Proposed cuts included; 10% on Agriculture, crop subsidies and Food Stamps cut (didn't provide a percentage), EPA - 5.5%, Transportation, 6.7%, Housing - 11%. The big winners were Defense and Homeland Security - 4.8% and 7% increases, respectively. Goler noted that the defense budget was higher than it ever was during the Cold War even when figuring in inflation.

Comment: Once again, the president goes after the little guy, with unprecedented increases for defense. Keep in mind that all of these budget numbers 'do not' include the costs of the war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
