There's Something Happening Here

Reported by Ellen - February 5, 2005

That's the first line of an old Buffalo Springfield song that sprang into my mind after I listened to Alan Colmes discuss the clip of Lt. General James Mattis saying that "It's a hell of a hoot" to shoot people. "You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis said. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

Colmes, like any decent person should be, was appalled at such sentiments. Yet judging by the hate mail he read on the air, it seems that the FOX News audience found his outrage worse than Mattis' bloodthirstiness.

Now that Alberto "Torture is OK so long as we can find a justification for it and call it something else" Gonzales has been confirmed as the US Attorney General and attention has waned from the mistreatment of prisoners, even those who have never been charged with a crime, the FOX audience has made its priorities clear. Brutality is OK, maybe even desirable. But dissent? Them's fightin' words.
