Is Fox having a Hard Time getting Democrats on their Shows?

Reported by Ellen - February 2, 2005

With the title - The Next Four Years on the screen, Jane Skinner, substituting for Shepard Smith, began a segment on Alberto Gonzales, President Bush's choice for Attorney General.

Skinner stated at the beginning of the segment that Democrats were already weighing in, with Patrick Leahy calling Gonzales the 'wrong man for the job.'

Then Skinner said she wondered if they would have the same problems with Democrats regarding President Bush's choice of Michael Chertoff for the Homeland Security position. The hearings for this position start tomorrow.

Skinner brought on Senator Susan Collins (R) Maine and said she is the 'woman who would know', because she was Chairwoman of the Governmental Affairs Committee, that was holding the hearings.

Senator Collins waxed poetically about how Mr. Chertoff was an extraordinary individual who was giving up his lifetime appointment on the appellate court for this challenging post.

Senator Collins stated that everyone has to remember that while Mr. Chertoff was Head of the Criminal Division at the Department of Justice, he was not 'deeply' involved in providing advise to the Department of Defense. (key word; deeply)

She said she expected vigorous questioning by her committee, but she certainly hoped there was not a repeat of questioning like Secretary Rice had gone through. She said she didn't really expect it from 'her' committee.

Skinner jumped in during the questioning to say that "We (Fox) did make attempts and were not able to get a Democratic Senator to respond for this segment. We wanta (her pronounciation) make sure that everybody knows we tried to make it fair and balanced but we were not successful."

Comment: Is this becoming a problem for Fox? Yesterday, we heard Neil Cavuto whine about Democrat, Attorney General, Eliot Spitzer, from NY, not coming on his show. Now, Fox couldn't procure 'one' Democratic Senator for it's show on the hearings for Homeland Security Director?
