Today's Good News: Hostage Begs for Life
Reported by Judy - January 25, 2005
Leave it to Oliver North to find some good news in the latest video of an American hostage in Iraq begging for his life.
Appearing on the Big Story with John Gibson today (Tuesday), North said it was "good news" that the hostage was appealing to leaders in the Arab world such as Lybian president Muammar Khadafy for help in securing his release. North said the man's captors probably told him what to say and that was a good sign because Khadafy might have some influence with them.
Seems a little silly. Why would the hostage takers want Khadafy's approval to release their captive?
The rest of North's segment was equally silly, a desperate attempt to make things sound good in Iraq on the eve of the election. Gibson was heartened by the fact that some Iraqi police fired on Iraqi insurgents handing out campaign leaflets. And North predicted a "massive turnout" in the election, as if that will do anything to end the terrorism.
Things "certainly" can turn out right if Americans will only be patient, North said. Afterall, he said, Americans fought in Vietnam for a dozen years and have only been in Iraq for not quite two years.
Yeah but Ollie, our fearless leader told us "major combat operations" in Iraq were over 20 months ago.
