A Night to Remember

Reported by Ellen - December 8, 2004

It was a very unusual night on FOX News with Alan Colmes (his radio show) last night. First, FOX military analyst Colonel David Hunt, a hawk who thinks the only reason there should be an investigation into the shooting of the unarmed wounded Iraqi in Fallujah is because it was caught on video, was one of two guests discussing whether Canada should offer sanctuary to US soldiers fleeing military service. No one who has heard Hunt on FOX (or read about him here) would be surprised to learn that he not only condemned the idea but was pushy and condescending toward the Canadian woman who quite eloquently explained why her citizens' group was supporting the soldiers.

But what shocked me was when Hunt started laughing at the callers.

Granted, the first caller to get Hunt going, Kate in Cincinatti, was off the wall. She said, "I think we should just go ahead and bomb Canada. Look what it got us in Iraq." Given how hawkish Hunt is, I half expected him to agree. After the second caller, he commented that Colmes' listeners must be drunk. Hunt was laughing again during the third call which was from a Canadian man who, essentially, shared Hunt's perspective but sounded a bit dorky. In my view, Hunt's behavior said more about his own character than any of the callers.

Next up, Colmes revisited the subject of UFO's, a topic that spooked me last week but I got through this segment without thinking about who or what might be lurking in the big, dark, empty field behind my home. Maybe it was because last night's guest was the Amazing Randy who explained why he remains unconvinced that the sightings and abductions described in the last show were the real thing.

At the end of that segment, Colmes suddenly announced that he was going to do psychic readings as "Colmesini the Unbelievable" the next hour. I thought he was kidding, and I'm still not positive that he wasn't, but it seemed to be legit as one after another caller seemed genuinely surprised and truthful about the insights Colmes gleaned about their lives without knowing them.

OK, Newsies, be careful what you're thinking. We know Colmes reads the blog sometimes.

PS What really made the day so memorable for my family was the birth of my newest niece, Elise, very premature but apparently healthy. I'm sending psychic hugs and good thoughts to her, my brother, Nicholas, and sister-in-law, Liz. ooxx
