Abstinence or Oral Sex

Reported by Deborah - November 27, 2004

O'Reilly brought up a new educational trend in England which, he claimed, encourages oral sex amoung teenagers. Jocelyn Elders, former Surgeon General, and Marilyn Billingsley M.D., joined him to discuss the growing trend of oral sex in middle and high schools in this country. O'Reilly got a chance, also, to talk up Bush's funding request for abstinence education and talk down Bill Clinton. 11/26/04 8PM

Both Elders and Billingsley agreed that oral sex was a bad idea for teens because it was not safe and both agreed that abstinence would be great,as well as unrealistic.
Billingsley claimed that sexually active teens are more likely to be depressed and suicidal and Elders gave a frightening statistic of 50% of teenagers engaging in oral sex.

O'Reilly managed to jab Clinton three times for his role in promoting this behavior. He also had a chance to promote his new book about kids indirectly by coming off as a great expert citing his experience as a high school teacher and claiming that it's all about self esteem.

comment:Well, the case for abstinence education was definitely well supported during this segment. Viewers were given a picture of a teen population out of control and unable to handle their hormones in a reasonable way. Sex education was only discussed in the context of educating kids to say no effectively.

What happened to the enlightened idea of informing kids thoroughly about all aspects of their sexuality and providing them with easy access to birth control and condoms to promote safety. In the four years since Bush took office, there has been a reactionary return to limiting sexual education. Parents in my school are horrified that sex education is part of the curriculum, which is an attitude that is so outdated, it horrifies the teachers. So often, the same parents who object to sex ed. are the ones who allow their daughter's to come to school with navel and thong exposed. The kids aren't about to abstain from sex. They'll just learn to lie better and if they can't get birth control, they will choose oral sex. The fact that kids are sexually active at 11 or 12 is an enigma and a real problem, that needs to be addressed with an open and enlightened attitude. Abstinence education is a simplistic cop out.
