Fox News: Clinton for UN Secretary General?

Reported by Melanie - October 22, 2004 -

Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico was a guest today (October 22, 2004) on Your World w/Neil Cavuto. Richardson was on to discuss the notion that Bill Clinton aims to become Secretary General of the United Nations and to discuss whether or not that would help, or hurt, the UN.

Cavuto said "word is" that Clinton's eyeing the job. Richardson said he didn't think it was very serious; that sections of the world alternate the position and an Asian is next in line to hold it; that it's "impractical;" that while it's a "fascinating possibility," he didn't "believe President Clinton would be interested in doing that." Richardson said "we checked with Clinton's office - I don't think there's much to this." Cavuto said "this isn't exactly new" and that there have been feelers out there "for a while," but Richardson said Clinton's looking forward to working on projects like his presidential library and domestic issues.

Video of Clinton, Kerry and Jimmy Carter standing together on a stage aired off and on during the segment.

COMMENT: As you can see, Richardson seemed to think this was quite an unlikely event. Cavuto said it wasn't "exactly new" and had been out there for "a while." Interesting Fox would air it now, so close to the election. I contend they are trying to strike fear in the hearts of their conservative viewers who can think of nothing worse than Kerry as President and Clinton as UN Secretary General.
