Nothing But a Bush Campaign Ad
Reported by Melanie - October 11, 2004 -
Your World w/Neil Cavuto today (October 11, 2004) opened with a report by Brenda Buttner which, in my opinion, was nothing more than a Bush campaign advertisement. It was so chock full of fantasy and spin it didn't come close to being "news."
Here's how it went:
Buttner: As the front lines here heat up, it looks like "the world is warming up to President Bush's foreign fight." Bush is selling his foreign policy on the campaign trail while "overseas it looks like many are buying it," from Australia to Afghanistan.
Cut to clip of Nile Gardener of the Heritage Foundation: "Support for President Bush is continuing to build in Europe and across the world. He is, I think, increasingly viewed as a man who stands by key principles, as a man who is successfully leading the war on terror despite very difficult circumstances."
Back to Buttner: Prime Minister Howard in Australia won "big time" over the weekend. His opponent wanted to pull troops from Iraq but now they'll stay. "A big boost for Bush here too." In Afghanistan, "just the fact of an election offers the President a victory." There was no violence, just voting, in the country's first stab at democracy. It's a defeat for Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Then there's the Vatican, long an opponent of the Iraq invasion. Buttner, quoting Cardinal Angelo Sadano said, a "high ranking official" referred to the situation there this way: "The child has been born. It may be illegitimate, but it's here, and it must be reared and educated."
Buttner again: "The French said no to the war but now it's oui oui to rebuilding contracts." Some banned countries are getting into US financed contracts by subcontracting. The French and Germans, who were opposed to the Iraq invasion, are joining 50 other countries and organizations in Tokyo this week to decide how to spend the 14 billion pledged last year to rebuild Iraq. Our election will be the true test but "a look overseas certainly offers some signs that the President is getting plenty of votes of confidence already."
