How Many Times Can You Say "Trial Lawyer?"

Reported by Melanie - October 5, 2004 -

Trying to strike fear and loathing in the hearts of its viewers, Fox News repeated the words "trial lawyer" as much as possible today (October 5, 2004) on Your World w/Neil Cavuto. Here's how they worked in:

4:05 p.m. ET. Fox reporter Degan McDowell, in a report on who Wall Street wants for president: "John Kerry's number two comes from maybe the most hated profession in corporate America. Trial lawyers and runaway lawsuits seen whacking company bottom lines."

4:05 p.m. ET. Degan McDowell again: "And just hours before the debate the Bush/Cheney team lining up to attack, launching two new ads saying trial lawyers hurt the country's health care system."

4:08 p.m. ET. Neil Cavuto addressing guest Jon Elsen: "What are we to make of what's at stake tonight? Wall Street typically, and again, people would say we're biased here but it's a largely Republican bastion, and they largely do not like trial lawyers, so how do they respond to that?"

4:08 p.m. ET. Guest Jon Elsen: "They don't like trial lawyers."

4:09 p.m. ET. Cavuto to guest Jack Welsh: "How, is it important Jack, ah, it, to get the trial lawyer stuff out? A lotta people don't like trial lawyers."

4:09 p.m. ET. Cavuto: "I've watched Edwards very closely. He is a very gifted speaker. He can go for the emotion, maybe going back to his trial lawyer days."

4:11 p.m. ET. Cavuto promoting an upcoming segment before going to a commercial break: "With Cheney in office, everyone said that the oil guys would get preferential treatment. So, under Edwards, then, could trial lawyers be the new teacher's pet?"

4:16 p.m. ET. Cavuto introducing Fox employee Andrew Napolitano: "Well, with Dick Cheney's Halliburton experience everyone thought that the oil guys would get the preferential treatment, but if Kerry/Edwards comes to pass, would trial lawyers be the next teacher's pet?"

4:17 p.m. ET. Napolitano: "A lot of plaintiff's lawyers, trial lawyers, have the personality and the telegenic gifts that John Edwards has, and they're not afraid to call up a Jack Welsh and say, pay us a hundred million dollars or we'll sue you and it'll cost you a hundred million dollars to defend the lawsuit."

4:18 p.m. ET. Napolitano: "If the trial lawyers start to file these lawsuits, shareholder value is going to go down, too much money is going to be spent settling the cases, too much money is going to be shifted in budgets into legal expenses, money that wasn't budgeted in the first place."
