Statementgate and Iraq
Reported by Ellen - September 29, 2004 -
Carl Cameron, revealed as a Bush pal by the movie Outfoxed, appeared on Fox News Live with Alan Colmes tonight to discuss tomorrow night's debate. But first, the latest "controversy" in the Kerry campaign. Let's call it statementgate.
Statementgate was uncovered when Colmes fed Cameron the line that there had been "some controversy" over something Kerry recently said. Cameron revealed that Kerry claimed to have been fatigued BECAUSE IT WAS LATE AT NIGHT (my emphasis because I wouldn't want anyone to miss this important point) when he made his statement about voting for funding the Iraq war before voting against it. Apparently, however, it was actually DAYTIME when Kerry made the statement. Many thanks to "Campaign Carl" for making sure to get this important fact to the American public. Many more thanks to FOX for being unafraid to report Real Journalism!
After statementgate, Cameron went on to describe for us the two liabilities both candidates have to deal with in tomorrow's debate:
Kerry has been "pounded" by Republicans as a flip-flopper for the last four months.
"The president because Iraq has not been going as smoothly in many American minds as he describes."
Not going smoothly? That's rather an understatement, isn't it? Especially given that some of those American minds belong to three prominent Republican senators who took the unprecedented step of going on Sunday talk shows last week during an election season and saying Iraq is a mess. Colmes has brought up this important fact several times lately but not tonight.
What about Bush's liability on the economy, health care, the deficit and civil liberties? Not mentioned.
