Bush Can't Do Anything Wrong
Reported by Melanie - September 27, 2004 -
Molly Henneberg reported today (September 27, 2004) on Dayside w/Linda Vester on George Bush's activities. (This is a companion post to "Kerry Can't do Anything Right," on Carl Cameron's report on John Kerry which immediately preceded Henneberg.)
The instant Vester tossed to Henneberg, George Bush emerged from a school bus parked inside the Midwest Livestock & Expo in Springfield, Ohio, which Fox was showing live. The crowd roared. Fox had the volume on the crowd's cheers turned up so high that Henneberg was hard to hear.
She began her report noting that Bush was taking the stage and said, "you can hear the crowd cheering behind me." (COMMENT: Believe me, you couldn't miss it.) She said that "before we get into the politics" of this the White House says that just before arriving in Ohio Bush received an update on relief efforts and damage estimates in Florida. (COMMENT: The Camera's still on Bush. The crowd is still going wild.) But, "back to the politics," this is Bush's 26th visit to Ohio, a state he "won in the 200 election by a little over 3 percentage points," and the most recent Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll shows him "winning Ohio by about that same margin."
Henneberg said this is an "education event here in Springfield," which is in Clarke County, a county Bush lost "by only 324 votes last time around" so "perhaps there's a strategic reason why he's here today," to try to change that. (COMMENT: The camera's still on Bush. The crowd's still going wild.)
She said the White House said Bush will talk about his No Child Left Behind "education initiative" which "Bush says is working to improve public schools" here in Ohio and around the country. Henneberg said at these events Bush "hits on many other topics. You can expect to hear about Iraq and the war on terror." She said he would "try out" some of the "lines" he "intends" to use in the debate and that Saturday he'll be back for another bus tour because Ohio is a key battleground state. (COMMENT: The camera's still on Bush. The crowd's still going wild.)
COMMENT: Again, this is a companion post to Kerry Can't do Anything Right." The difference in tone between the two reports, I hope, is fairly clear.
