Rumsfeld flip-flops on Iraqi elections (or, Democracy Lite)

Reported by Chrish - September 25, 2004 -

Today 9/24 on Studio B Mike Emanuel reported (at 3:37 edt) that yesterday, on Capitol Hill, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said that if only 75-80% of Iraqis could vote in the planned national elections next January and the rest couldn't because of violence in their towns, "so be it".

TODAY Rumsfeld reversed himself and made it clear that the elections should be open to ALL Iraqis, and that "we and the government intend to see that ALL can vote."

Comment. Jeez. I can't believe that he would even publicly suggest that it would be OK to hold elections where not everyone can vote - what's the point? It's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

As far as a gripe with FOX coverage, they did not point out that he "flip-flopped", merely reported his opposing stances on consecutive days. Republicans are allowed mistakes and changes of mind. Interesting that the standards are higher for Dems and liberals; no mistakes tolerated.
