Your Job Was Outsourced? Get Over It, Says FOX Analyst

Reported by Marie Therese - September 18, 2004 -

"And, you know, I feel sorry for someone who has learned to do a low-end job and putting stuff together by hand. But, if that's what you do and you live in Ohio, you're gonna have to learn to do something else." - Tobin Smith, President of Changewave Research, during the "Market Movers" segment on Big Story with John Gibson, 9/17/04, 5:38 PM to 5:40 PM EDT.

Mr. Smith had some other interesting things to say on a variety of subjects.

EXCERPTS FROM MR. SMITH'S REMARKS

"If you work in Ohio, if you've had jobs being lost over the last year, hey, guess what! - it's been lost for the last forty years. And I think, when somebody like Kerry comes in and says (lowers his voice in a caricature of Kerry) "we're going to create jobs here" (resumes his normal higher pitched voice), they've heard this malarky before. And I think the smart, intelligent person says "If I do something that can be done 50% cheaper someplace else in the world, I need to learn to do something else. And the President's not going to do that for you. You're gonna do it for yourself. I think Ohioans see through Kerry's malarky."

When asked by John Gibson whether or not it is possible for the government to offer tax incentives to companies to keep them here, Smith answers:

"No. And you know what. I think, if John [Kerry] actually ever had a job or ever actually employed or built a company, he would know that we in business make decisions based on what's best for our customer and a lot of that is 'Can I deliver a product or service at the right price?' And you know, I feel sorry for someone who has learned to do a low-end job and putting stuff together by hand. But if that's what you do and you live in Ohio, you're gonna have to learn to do something else. And I think Bush has been straightforward. I mean, Kerry says Bush spins everything. I think it's been the reverse. He says 'Listen, we have to do job retraining. We have to learn some new skills.'

And we have a lot of growth in this country. You know, we have growth that makes - every other country in Europe would do back flips to have the employment rate we have in Cinncinati."

Do you agree or disagree with Mr. Smith? I'd especially like to hear from anyone who lives in Ohio, since Tobin Smith selected your state for special mention.
