RNC Butt Coverage

Reported by Deborah - September 6, 2004 -

Lt .John Bill Calhoun, the one witness to Bush's service in Alabama, appeared on Hannity & Colmes to tell his tale, to the delighted Mike Gallagher. His story was a typically slick, Republican cover-up. 9/6/04

Calhoun claimed that when he saw the original allegations about Bush not being in Alabama back during the campaign in 2000, he got really angry. So he called the campaign office in Austin to tell them he had seen him there. According to Calhoun, someone in the office said that they weren't worried and it would blow over.In all this time, he never heard from anyone.

Gallagher jumped in, " If they were worried and trying to cover-up, they would have pursued you."

Calhoun seemed a bit confused and rambled on," For years I didn't know which Bush they were talking about. But then I heard it was the fighter pilot...."
Calhoun claimed that he was brought to his office to sign in in May or June 1972.
However, he couldn't say a word about any date beyond November and never said that he saw him after the sign in May/June 1972.

When Colmes asked Calhoun about the missing records, he blamed it on lack of computers back then.

Gallagher congratulated him on coming forward like a good American. As far as Gallagher was concerned, the case was closed. As far as I'm concerned, it's still wide open.
