Rebuttal to Dick Morris

Reported by Marie Therese - September 3, 2004 -

On The O'Reilly Factor Tuesday, August 31st and then again in an article printed September 2nd online at The Hill, Republican strategist Dick Morris claimed that the loose association of groups that comprise the Democratic base will fall apart the minute John Kerry comes out and takes a stand on anything.

(Begin excerpt) "But recent polling by Rasmussen suggests a further move for the president's campaign to make. While Bush voters are largely united on issues like Iraq, terrorism, and the Patriot Act, Kerry's supporters are sharply divided on all of these questions. Almost as many see Iraq as an integral part of the war on terror as feel that it is a distraction. The Massachusetts Democrat's supporters are split on whether we are winning or losing the war on terror and deeply divided over whether the Patriot Act should be modified or repealed."

"John Kerry cannot open his mouth on any of these issues and avoid losing votes. Any position he takes will alienate parts of his vote share. Generically, if he tacks to the left, he risks driving moderates to Bush but if he hews to the right, he deflates his base and, perhaps, moves critical votes to Nader, as Gore did in 2000 by failing to feature his environmentalism in key states such as Florida."

(Later) "And, as Bush looks to the future, he can ask his opponent, which his priority would be: Finishing the task or bringing our troops home. Most Kerry voters would opt for the latter but the Democrat is likely to tilt to the former, alienating even more of his own voters.

Should Kerry dodge the issues, as Nixon did, Bush can counter in the debates, "There you go again," a reprise of themes past." (End excerpt)

Comment:

Dear Dick,

There IS one unifying idea for the wonderfully diverse group of people supporting a genuinely good man, a brave man, an honorable man, a compassionate man, a man who served his country AND faced down a hostile audience of veterans at the American Legion Convention while Dubya ran as fast as he could from the hostile audience of African-Americans at the NAACP Convention.

ANYBODY BUT BUSH ANYBODY BUT BUSH
ANYBODY BUT BUSH ANYBODY BUT BUSH
ANYBODY BUT BUSH ANYBODY BUT BUSH
ANYBODY BUT BUSH ANYBODY BUT BUSH
ANYBODY BUT BUSH ANYBODY BUT BUSH
ANYBODY BUT BUSH ANYBODY BUT BUSH

Sincerely,
The REST of the United States!
