Reported by Melanie - September 2, 2004 -

Toward the end of Dayside w/Linda Vester today (September 2, 2004), Eric Hoplin of the College Republican National Committee appeared as Vester's guest. According to Vester, Hoplin is being talked about as the "next Karl Rove." After a minute or two discussing the college Republican movement, Vester changed the subject to that of 527 organizations.

Vester: "Let me ask you about 527's. These organizations, MoveOn.org, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. There's been a lot of talk about their affect on this campaign. What do you think?"

Hoplin said he thought one of the "flaws with campaign finance reform is that it restricts freedom" and that having "political discourse is a great thing in the country."

Vester: "So you're okay with these groups?"

Hoplin said he was okay with them as long as they "present honest discourse. And, I think some of the, MoveOn.org comparing George Bush to Hitler was very dishonest and but, you know, it's America and we have the freedom to speak our minds and, so, that's what I would say about the 527s."

COMMENT: That MoveOn.org compared George Bush to Hitler is disinformation the right seems unable to let go of. Maybe Hoplin doesn't know the details but I'd bet Vester does. She, however, was happy to let this incorrect information go unchallenged. Heck. It almost seemed like part of the script.
