#11 Miller/Cheney favored at FOXNews.com

Reported by Ellen - September 2, 2004 -

It's a tale of two conventions. Compare these two Fox News highlights:

Here are the two opening paragraphs from the coverage of the third night of theDemocratic Convention:

"It's official - John Kerry is the Democratic presidential nominee. Now that that's out of the way, let's get to the best FOXNews.com coverage from Day Three of the Democratic National Convention:

"The man of the night Wednesday was John Edwards, the North Carolina senator who is Kerry's running mate. Edwards talked about his upbringing and why he thinks the nation needs to elect the Kerry-Edwards ticket."

These are the two opening paragraphs from Fox's coverage of the third night of the Republican Convention:

What does it say about a political convention on the third night when the angriest and strongest words come not from the vice presidential nominee but a senator from the opposing party?

Read Sen. Zell Miller's speech or, better, watch the video and see what you think. Miller is a Democrat from Georgia who is retiring this year but who has long been a supporter of President Bush's way of thinking."

Fox does go on to discuss and - to some extent, criticize - some of the substance of Cheney's views but never gives the same weight to Edwards. So who is taken more seriously as a candidate in these two pieces? I think it's clearly Cheney.

More importantly, Fox showcases Bush's support in the Republican piece but shoos Kerry "out of the way" right at the beginning of the Democratic coverage.

Fair and balanced? I disagree.
