AP Reports DOD Infiltrated by Spy

Reported by Marie Therese - August 31, 2004 -

A highly placed Department of Defense analyst has been under investigation as a possible spy. According to a report by the Associated Press in Jerusalem that appeared in The Guardian yesterday, "Israel's government has rejected allegations of espionage within the Pentagon, insisting it maintains a ban on spying in the US. "

As CNN noted yesteday morning, they will not release the name of the analyst because he has not been charged yet.

Don't you just love how selective the media is in "outing" suspects? Apparently the higher up in the administration the perpetrator is, the more considerate the media becomes, especially if the news happens to break on the eve of a major political convention.

Why wasn't CNN as concerned about Steven Hatfill's reputation? If you remember, he was John Ashcroft's "person of interest" in the anthrax investigation, whose life and reputation were literally destroyed by three powerful little words uttered by the Attorney General. He has never been charged in the case.

And how about Oregon attorney Brandon Mayfield? He was "detained" for questioning as a possible participant in the Spanish train bombings yet was never charged. Every media outlet in the United States released his name for general consumption and beat the drums of supposed guilt over and over again for weeks. The man was completely innocent.

The alleged Israeli spy is named by AP and in several overseas news accounts. But, so far, not in this country.

Ah, the perks of power and privilege!
