ABC to RNC: Get This Over With!

Reported by Melanie - August 31, 2004 -

I'm reporting here on tonight's ABC's coverage, hosted by Peter Jennings, of the RNC. Their coverage began at 10:00 p.m. ET and went straight to Arnie. (I won't summarize any of the speeches. We'll hear that, ad nauseum, tomorrow.)

After ABC aired Arnie's speech, it was to "the twins," (who I thought were immature and giggly), who then introduced GW, who then introduced Laura. Just before Laura began to speak, Jennings, for what reason I'll never know said, the "convention is moving at full speed through prime time."

ABC didn't interrupt or interject opinion again until the last 60 seconds (9:59 p.m. ET) when Jennines mumbled along and said that Laura Bush was "doing what the campaign wants her to do." He then tossed to Kate Snow who reported that "a couple" women were "tearing up" over Laura's speech but that Arnie had the "real energy."

Then it was to reporter Jake Pepper (not certain about the last name here) who agreed about women delegates being "touched." Jake added: "This is one of the most popular First Ladies in American history." Then, back to Jennings who said Laura's speech seemed like it was "written by somebody else." Jennings then turned to George Stephanopoulos who agreed, and said it was "very effective."

COMMENT: Wow! Hard hitting coverage happenin' at ABC! Tackle the issues! Go for it! (Wake me up when you're ready.)
