The Economy Stinks
Reported by Eleanor - August 28, 2004 -
On the Cost of Freedom financial series (Aug. 28, 10:00-12:00 a.m.), the questions said more than the answers.
On Bulls & Bears with Brenda Buttner, the question was, "If Bush gets a bounce, will the market bounce as well?" The answers were a series of "yes's" and "maybes." One comment worth noting was that if Kerry wins, he will give away drugs free. (So get out of drug stocks.)
Neil Cavuto on Business asked, "Could the protesters be risking our money?" and "Will the protesters help Bush?" Cavuto seemed to think that if the protesters "throw things," the voters might think "anyone but these guys." Tanya Mayo of notinourname.net spoke for a group of protesters saying they are taking on the charge to repudiate this Administration.
Stuart Varney's question on "Forbes on Fox" was "Why is your money at risk due to the Swift Boat controversy?" and "Who is hurting your money more - Kerry or Bush?" It all depends on how the economy fares between now and election day. One of the most interesting comments was that the economy is bad...lots of negatives....Bush is better off focusing on safety.
The emphasis of Cashin' In with Terry Keenan was on the economy between now and November. Bob Beckel summed it up with: "The economy stinks."
Comment: These programs are more about politics than money, and the over-all tone of today's message hinted at doubts, even among the faithful, of a win for Bush. Concerns were: Lack of job creation; the deficit; health insurance; business spending; poverty; Iraq; protesters; taxes; character (of both); risk & fear; political theater; and bad news in September and October. Everything hinges on a convention bounce. (Debates not mentioned.)
