Kerry Fighting Back
Reported by Eleanor - August 26, 2004 -
Special Report with Bret Hume (Aug. 26, 6:00 p.m.) spent 20 minutes on the smear vet story. Kerry was shown on video defending himself.
Kerry called this a smear campaign. He has always been honest. The Navy has documents to support what he says. He's telling "the God's honest truth" about what happened over there. Americans do not deserve "fear and smear." Major Garrett made the observation that the "betrayal" in '71 is the issue, and Kerry knew it would be a problem.
During the panel discussion the focus was on how much the smear vet story has affected Kerry in the polls. Juan Williams made the point that there might be a backlash since in the Gallup poll, 63% think that Kerry is telling the truth. Bush's approval rating is now 51% on the Fox poll, up from last month.
A short report on Rumsfeld and Abu Ghraib ended with Rumsfeld's comment that he "can't know what happens on the midnight shift" in one prison. (Yep, the buck stops on second shift.)
Comment: I was surprised to see a Fox poll with Kerry leading 48% to 37% in the swing states.
