Voter Intimidation

Reported by Deborah - August 25, 2004 -

People for the American Way and the NAACP held a press conference today to release a report on voter intimidation of minority groups. Ralp Neas and Julian Bond spoke of plans to protect voters by the Election Protection Coalition. This press conference was aired on C-span. 8/25/04 4:45PM ET

Ralph Neas explained that the report exposes numerous incidents of voter intimidation throughout the country, as well as statements from officials proposing plans to suppress the vote in this election. Neas directly accused the Republicans of being responsible for all these proven incidents. The report also discusses the various tactics used, so that voters can be educated and aware.

A report by MIT and Cal Tech, reported that 4 million minority voters were disinfranchised during the 2000 election. The Election Protection Coalition will have 25,000 volunteers on hand at 3500 precincts in 18 states on this coming election day. Among these will be 5,000 lawyers, who will be ready to file immediate complaints and cameras to record the incidents. There will also be a hotline to call for immediate assistance, 1 866 our vote.

It will be interesting to see how the media covers this important development.
