God and Politics

Reported by Eleanor - August 19, 2004 -

Fox & Friends (Aug. 19, 7:00 a.m.) spent some time this morning on the subject of God and George Bush.

Paul Kengor, author of God and George Bush, indicated that there is a mis-perception about George's faith stating, among other things, that Bush doesn't believe that God called him to invade Iraq. He had "four or five" reasons for going to war, none because of God. He ran for president because he had an "epiphany" sitting in church, while running for governor, and all presidents call on God on the eve of war.

E.D. made the observation that Kerry says he is religious, but his religious speeches are usually in black churches to black audiences. Kengor said that Bush expressed his faith openly, in church only three times, while Clinton spoke in church 21 times, and asked people to go out and vote. This ended with the observation that if Kerry wins, he will be a president who is denied communion in certain catholic churches. If Kerry loses, it will be because he loses the catholic vote.

Comment: This interview was meant to discount the belief among many on the left that Bush feels he can do no wrong because God tells him what to do, and to trash the religious views of the democrats, of course. What they failed to note is that it's really hard for us on the left to think anything else. A rational, intelligent, sane human being would not do what Bush has done to this country in four short years. Therefore, if he doesn't believe he's talking to God, and believes that his actions are entirely his own, and not God's, then he must be irrational, stupid and insane, and we don't want to believe that about our president. When we can say, well, at least, he thinks he's talking to God, it's easier to sleep nights. Or is it? Not too many good choices here.
