Fox Hypes a "Political Event"

Reported by Melanie - August 16, 2004 -

Wendell Goler said something revealing during his Dayside w/Linda Vester report on Bush's speech earlier today (August 16, 2004) about reorganizing US troops. At the end of his report, Goler said that despite the serious nature of the speech, the White House says it was "a political event."

COMMENT: I heard Donald Rumsfeld interviewed today on an airplane heading home from Russia. Rumsfeld said that the details of the reorganization still need to be worked out, that this could easily take until 2006 before it's complete, and that nothing's decided yet. Since we now know this was a "political event" and no details have been worked out, I'd bet the whole reason for the speech is to give the electorate the overall impression that Bush is bringing troops home. That seems to be the gist of what's being reported. Also, if the speech was a "political" one, why did Fox give it so much time? All that breathless hyping this morning just went on and on. A political speech means a campaign speech, not a policy speech. It's dangerous when we see "news" organizations hyping campaign speeches.
