Marriage vs Civil Union

Reported by Marie Therese - August 15, 2004 -

Newshound Editorial

Last week the California Supreme Court voided 4,000 gay marriages performed in San Francisco. Throughout America, the whole issue of so-called "gay" marriage threatens to divide us even further.

But, emotion aside, think about exactly what we're all arguing about.

It's a word.

One single word.

MARRIAGE.

Since the word "marriage" is so interconnected with religiosity and, since most Americans wish all citizens to enjoy the rights and benefits of that citizenship, including having their unions certified by a state agency, why not remove the word "marriage" from the civil lexicon and subsitute some other word or words, such as, "civil union" for ALL joinings of two human beings performed at City Hall?

Go to City Hall. Be "civilly united".

Go to church. Be "married".

Change the word.

It's so simple.

Which is why we probably won't do it.
