If I Can't Have It My Way, I'll Pick Up My Toys and Go Home

Reported by Marie Therese - August 8, 2004 -

The Tim Russert Show. CNBC. Saturday, August 7, 2004. 7:00 PM EDT.

Last night Bill O'Reilly showed his true stripes as a Herbert Hoover Republican. Privatise Social Security and Medicare. Reduce the rich man's tax burden to free him to create more jobs. Give local entities control of schools. Shrink the government. Muzzle the trial lawyers.

The Machiavellian brillance of FOX News is that they have snookered Joe and Jane Average into the misguided belief that a vote for the corporations is a vote for God and country. And Mr. O'Reilly is one of chief architects of this house built on shifting sands.

In contrast, economist Paul Krugman understands this and, as he said last night, accurately predicted anemic job growth during a period of excalating expenses and dwindling revenues, a fact that the blustering O'Reilly did his best to shout down.

The most telling moment for me came when O'Reilly said he'd close down his business and fire 50 people if his taxes went up.

So much for lookin' out for the "folks". Wonder how his employees felt when they heard that remark? Especially the day after an absolutely horrible jobs report.
