Spinning of the Job Numbers
Reported by Eleanor - August 6, 2004 -
A guest on Fox and CNBC, between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. Aug. 6, mouthed exactly the same spin for interpreting the new job numbers. The answer is that the 32,000 jobs reflect a "payroll" number. If you factor in "entrepreneurs," the number is closer to 600,000 new jobs. Therefore, our economy is creating jobs.
Comment: Um-mm. So on close examination this means that no one is hiring, so you're not likely to find a job. Answer: Start your own business, and you have a job. The problem with that kind of logic is that even if you have the resources to start your own business, no one will be able to buy your product or service because no one is hiring your potential customers. Besides, the comparative number is payroll, not a "create your own job" measure.
Don't you wonder how they came up with this? It must be from a republican "Memo" somewhere, since we anticipated 200,000 "payroll" jobs and fell miserably short.
