Your Morning News on Fox
Reported by Eleanor - August 5, 2004 -
Fox & Friends started the day again (Aug. 5, 7:00 a.m.) with politics as usual, saying that the U.S. is releasing more information after being accused of playing politics. It seems that a third person is providing information resulting in the terror alerts.
Our Fox friends discussed reports that thirteen people in England were arrested, and a plot was uncovered to blow up Heathrow. At least one person is getting directions from Osama bin Laden. There were photos of underpasses, etc. and contact with six people in the U.S. in the last 2 or 3 weeks. Sample comments: Much is being made of "old information," but people looked at the photos recently, although the surveillance was done a while ago. People who talk of "old information" don't understand the War on Terror. The plot was drawn up recently. Could be a week ago, month ago, or year ago. To protect themselves, "the terrorists skedaddle."
With the republican version of events around the terror alert out of the way, our Fox friends showed a clip from the video of the vets talking about how Kerry "lied" about the Swift Boat incident. The short discussion about this issue was absent any reference to the accusations of fraud surrounding the video. Instead, E.D. said something about John Kerry saying you should elect him, when he said he did something heroic that he didn't do. No questions were asked about the film's authenticity. This segment was more a "teaser" than a story, and lasted about one and a half minutes. The point seemed to be to get it out there. (Wow! What an opportunity missed to set the record straight!)
In the discussion about "sleeper cells" with Marc Sageman, author of Understanding Terror Networks, Doocy asked about the "new guy" who was arrested that was close to pulling something off. Sageman said he waits for details because sometimes these things turn out not to be true. Doocy and E.D. reiterated their earlier speculations, and Sageman talked about the changes after 9/11, saying that after we took out the training camps in Afghanistan, spontaneous cells have begun to arise. (I had a feeling this interview did not go as expected.)
Mitt Romney, governor of Massachusetts and author of Turnaround, talked about Olympics security. In a brief discussion about terror alerts, Romney put in a plug for the Patriot Act . Then he said that Americans should not identify themselves as Americans at the Olympics, and that Americans are being targeted around the world. From there, the conversation went to same sex marriage, with Mitt saying he favors a national standard with a ban on gay marriage in the national Constitution, and not just state constitutions.
The talk then transitioned to a Mosque raid in Albany, NY where two people were arrested for trying to acquire a missile. Brian asked, "Is it connected to al Qaeda?"
Mancow, who is a regular contributor to Fox & Friends, talked about F&F being the #1 morning show. This is followed by comments about Europe not being big fans of America, and a fat Statue of Liberty being taken down and replaced by something like a hamburger (?) knocking down the twin towers. One of the Fox friends said, "They want us to be a third world country." (No, I think they want us to join the world community, rather than engage in preemptive wars.)
The rest of the program was devoted to Kobe, Hacking, a one-minute spot on the Vote for Change tour that our Fox Friends called Music in Politics, and about 20 seconds were spent on the violence in Iraq in a Lauren Green news report.
