Convention Non-Coverage

Reported by Judy - August 3, 2004 -

Despite its self-serving advertising claiming to be the network of political record for the Democratic National Convention, Fox News actually showed less of the convention than two other cable networks.

Media Matters for America tabulated the amount of time that Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC spent actually covering convention speeches live. The results, available at Media Matters for America's website , are that Fox News showed only three hours and 40 minutes of live convention speeches over the four days of the convention. CNN devoted four hours, 56 minutes, and MSNBC 5 hours, 27 minutes.

As posts during the convention indicated, Fox News cut away from speeches in favor of interviews and pundit panels. According to Media Matters' tabulation, most of the difference in coverage was due to Fox News' briefer coverage of speeches by former President Jimmy Carter, former Vice President Al Gore, Senator Edward Kenedy, Ret. General Wesley Clark, the Rev. Al Sharpton, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

With those stats on the record, it should be easy to compare Fox News' coverage of the Republican National Convention with its coverage of the Democrats'. If Fox News shows more GOP speeches, their phones are gonna ring.

Media Matters deserves a pat on the back for performing that service.
