Even a Few Words Paint a Picture

Reported by Melanie - July 29, 2004 -

At 4:42 p.m. ET today (July 29, 2004) on Your World w/Neil Cavuto, Cavuto said this to introduce reporter Degan McDowell: Stocks have been "cobbling together" gains for three days in a row, should that give Democrats a cause to worry?

COMMENT: Last Friday the Dow closed at 9,962.22. Today it closed at 10,129.24. That's a Dow gain in four (not three) days of 167.02. The Nasdaq closed last Friday at 1,849.09. It closed today at 1,881.06. That's a Nasdaq gain of 31.97 over four (not three) days.

These gains aren't all that great. Certainly not great enough to suddenly give Democrats a "cause to worry."

Still, the everyday, casual listener who doesn't know much about the stock market could easily assume, from Cavuto's introduction, that the market is doing much, much better than it is. (Good for Bush.) Which, after all, is precisely why Cavuto chose to introduce McDowell this way.
