Light at the End of the Tunnel Talk

Reported by Judy - July 22, 2004 -

Republicans are continuing to follow the script that the nation's leaders -- Democrat and Republican -- followed during the Vietnam War. Today (July 22) a Republican senator predicted that American troops will be coming home in just a few months.

In an interview on Fox and Friends (8:22 a.m. EDT), Sen. James Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, discussed how swell things were on his recent trip to Iraq. "I think it's a miracle and the story isn't being told," he said, apparently not having watched Fox News' daily "Happy Iraq" reports. Inhofe was thrilled with how well the new government, made up of three political factions in Iraq, is doing, and what a great job the U.S. is doing training Iraqi soldiers to take over security.

"In just a very few months we should have them in a place to take care of themselves and [some of] our troops will be able to come home," he said.

Too bad Fox didn't use its swell split screen technique and show Inhofe on one side and the day-long "firefight" in Iraq which John Cookson reported on from Baghdad earlier (8:11 a.m. EDT). With air support bombing the insurgents and fighting going on all day, it sounds more like a battle to me.

But I'm not going to quibble over word choice. Inhofe has seen the light at the end of the tunnel and our troops will begin to come home in just a very few months. And I'm going to hold him to it.
