A Nice Little Fear Mongering Fix?

Reported by Melanie - July 22, 2004 -

At 1:50 p.m. ET today (July 22, 2004) on Dayside w/Linda Vester, Pentagon reporter Bret Baier broke in with a full fledged "Fox News Alert." Baier said a Turkish ship was being towed out to sea off the US coast in the area of Baltimore, MD, and that the captain of the chip had told authorities a bomb was on board.

Checking CNN & MSNBC right away, and in the minutes that followed, nothing.

Again at 1:59 p.m. ET Fox went to Baier at the Pentagon with another full fledged "Fox News Alert."

This time Baier had new information, that now the captain was refusing to let the ship be searched.

I switched back and forth between MSNBC and CNN for the next few minutes. At 2:14 p.m. ET MSNBC had a "News Flash" announcement about it.(MSNBC's "News Flashes" are very, very tame, no flashing lights, dramatic music, etc.). I continued to watch for a few more minutes but did not see any coverage about it on CNN.

COMMENT: Bret Baier was very stern and serious in his presentation during both "Fox News Alerts." Since none of the three 24-hour cable news stations are talking about it now, I suspect more was made of this story than was warranted. (It did serve as a nice little fear mongering fix though, I will say that.) I'll be interested to see how much more we hear about this over the course of the rest of the day.
