Stewart on "Talking Points"

Reported by Eleanor - July 16, 2004 -

Jon Stewart (July 15, 11:16 p.m.) on the Daily Show, as usual, makes an excellent political point with his brilliant comedic satire. His point is that our media has mastered superbly the art of making the audience believe what they hear when it is repeated over and over again.

Stewart's example was how the popular media has used and is using repetition of talking points to define Edwards and Kerry to their audience. Examples: Edwards is a "disingenuous, unaccomplished liberal" or "way out of the mainstream" said countless times. Kerry and Edwards are "the first and fourth most liberal members of the U.S. Senate." And the fundraiser at the Radio City Music Hall was a "hate fest." Stewart ended with, "Why do I believe these things are true - because they're said a lot "- and he showed the video clips to prove it.

Comment: The American media has learned the power of the poison pen - used with special effect when they are not challenged by the viewers. It's time for a powerful grass roots challenge, don't you think?
