A Win-Win For the Real Crooks

Reported by Eleanor - July 16, 2004 -

In passing, I noted in the Fox coverage after Martha's sentencing (July 16, 10:55 a.m.), a guest saying, "Thank goodness, she made the statement after the sentence, or she would have gotten the electric chair."

Brigitte Quinn moderated this discussion as another guest brought up Ken Lay and Enron saying, "It sends a message that business as usual is not acceptable." The liberal guest then stated, "This doesn't affect the economy. It was a personal matter. It sends a message that you do not cooperate with authorities." (Martha was charged with lying to federal agents stated as "obstruction of justice" - not insider trading. If she had not talked to the feds, there would have been no charges.)

Comment: This over-the-top coverage of Martha Stewart's stock sale is the most outrageous thing the media has done since the two-year obsession with Clinton's sex life. She's a democrat, a woman, highly successful, (a billionaire who can afford fancy lawyers according to Fox), and an excellent way for those in power to set a standard as to how the real corporate criminals will be treated. If she doesn't serve the ten months, or even if she does, the real corporate criminals who stole millions from their stock holders will say they should be treated the same, when their crimes far exceed lying to federal agents. It's a win-win for the real crooks.
